There were hints of it last night in Orlando when the Cavaliers were less than sharp in closing out the Orlando Magic after taking a huge lead. But聽in Miami, missing Kevin Love for a second straight night and on a back-to-back, the Cavaliers got blasted by the Heat for the second time this season in Miami. The Heat shot the lights out, while the Cavaliers couldn t remove the lid on their rim until it was far too late for a full comeback. 聽Miami took this one 106-92 on the strength of 55% shooting and a frenzied up-tempo pace.

68-36 The Miami backcourt bombarded the Cavaliers in this one and their top three guards outscored the Cavs top three guards by a 68-36 margin. Dwyane Wade, who has been on quite a run lately, scored a game-high 32 points on 13-of-18 shooting. New acquisition Goran Dragic added 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go with nine assists. Even Mario Chalmers added 16 points on 6-of-10 from the floor. While the Heat had just eight fastbreak points, they did consistently get into their offense early down the floor, not waiting for the Cavaliers to setup their halfcourt defense entirely. There were countless plays where Wade or Dragic took one quick read and knifed into the paint for a bucket or a dump-off. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers backcourt that was firing on all cylinders in Orlando wasn t in Miami. Kyrie Irving came back to earth with a 5-of-15 shooting performance (2-of-7 from three-point range) for his 21 points. J.R. Smith was only 3-for-8 for eight points. Iman Shumpert added seven to the cause. With Love s scoring out of the equation, the Cavs could ill afford to get just eight points from Smith.

45-32 The other place the wine and gold missed Love dearly was on the glass, getting outrebounded 45-32. It was even worse in the first half where Miami grabbed 25 boards compared to 12 for Cleveland. In the first 24 minutes of the game, the Cavaliers also shot just 36% from the field. Grabbing only 12 rebounds when missing that many shots is unacceptable.

2-for-8, 7-0-1-0-0 That s the stat line for LeBron James in the first half of his second return visit to Miami. After a scary fall in Orlando that left James a game-time decision according to his own account post-game, the MVP candidate looked far from one. James took several聽forced, off-balance perimeter shots after little ball movement in the halfcourt. When he did take it to the basket, he was met by Miami defenders that knocked the ball out without drawing foul calls. It s quite bizarre not to see James record a rebound, steal, or block in an entire half. It s even more rare to see him dish out just one assist. Of course, when the team has just 15 field goals in the first half, there is some explanation for that. James scored 16 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as he surprisingly stayed out there with bench players in Kendrick Perkins, James Jones, Matthew Dellavedova, and Shawn Marion for the majority of the quarter. The Cavs cut the deficit to just 12 after falling behind by 25 points, but the Heat didn t allow it to get any closer.

19-5 Miami sprinted away from the Cavs heading into halftime thanks to a 19-5 run where they expanded the lead from four to 18. This was immediately following Iman Shumpert s fourth steal of the game and second straight bucket had given the Cavaliers some life and forced a Miami timeout. It was Wade who led the charge with 14 points in this stretch, The Cavaliers made just two shots in the final 5:35 of the second quarter and turned it over three times. Every time the Cavaliers sped up the pace, it only backfired as Miami got easier buckets. The Heat were inconceivably hot in the first half, hitting 23-of-36 shots (64%).

11-of-33 The wine and gold took nearly 42% of their shots from behind the arc, yielding a 21-point advantage from that range when compared to Miami. Only James shot it at a strong clip (4-of-8), however.

31:11 Who was third on the team in minutes tonight? Try James Jones, who hit just 2-of-8 shots for his six points. I think Jones can provide some value in small amounts when he s taking and hitting outside shots. However, 31 minutes, even without Love, is far too much. Granted, the Heat did play Udonis Haslem, Michael Beasley, and Henry Walker at the four slot, so the size wasn t much of an issue. Shawn Marion, who saw action for the聽first time since February 12, is a comparable option when healthy. It s a trade-off between offense and defense, and it s hopefully one that doesn t need to be overanalyzed when Kevin Love is back in action.

51% and 39% The Heat shot 51% on contested shots (compared to 64% on uncontested). The Cavaliers shot 39% on uncontested shots (compared to 37% on contested).聽In the NBA, extremely hot and extremely cold nights like this are going to happen. What s less than enjoyable to think about is that the Cavaliers could very well be playing Miami or Indiana in the first round of the playoffs less than one month from now, and they ve lost to each of them twice on the road.
